Safer Circles

A safe and supportive program for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who have experienced life under persecution.

Who is it for?

This program is for refugees, migrants and anyone who experienced life under persecution recently or in the past. It is for adults 18 years old and over.

**** The identity and privacy of participants will remain strictly confidential. ****

What is this about?

According to the UN Refugee Agency, war and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.

Living under persecution or constant threat has many implications; some are more apparent, some much less. This impact leaves an imprint on our bodies, minds and souls. It can tear apart families and communities.

In a small group, we will connect, share stories, listen, laugh, and perhaps cry. We will have an opportunity to express ourselves in a safe, non-judgmental space, leave some pain behind, and make room for new possibilities to emerge.

Along the way, we will learn valuable tools for everyday use, which can assist us in cultivating a greater sense of safety for ourselves, our families and our communities. With safety reestablished, we can become more authentic, confident and happier.

The group will be led by me, Uri Bookman.

Who am I?

Born in Israel, I have been living in Australia for the last 20 years. I am a Trauma-informed group facilitator, a trainer, a personal alignment coach and a psychotherapist.

I left Israel over 30 years ago and travelled for 10 years in search of a peaceful life. However, the trauma of growing up in a conflict zone left me living in fear, always on alert for any possible danger, even when none was around. When I hit mid-life, I faced personally challenging circumstances. I realised it was up to me to create the peace I was seeking. I made a solid commitment to myself and embarked on a journey of self-discovery, including numerous seminars, retreats, and training. I am so fortunate to have found the peace I was searching for. These days, I am (more often than not) calm and centred and able to be fully present for my family, friends and community.

About the project

For at least the last five generations, my family have migrated from one side of the world to another, escaping persecution and searching for peace or new beginnings. I have followed in their footsteps.

Earlier this year, I was inspired by a book my mum wrote about her life in which she described the life of her migrant family in Wellington, New Zealand.

Through this program, I am offering support and simple yet powerful tools to others who have experienced pain, displacement and trauma.

The program is free, delivered in English via video conferencing or in person and includes the following:

  • Two one-on-one sessions for each participant (approx. 1 hour).

  • Eight group meetings (approx. 2 hours).
